A Good List

A former coworker posted this picture, it is as good a reason as any to vote for the Democratic nominee if you are not a fan of Hillary Clinton. I for one, am voting for her but I understand a lot of people are still feeling hurt that Bernie Sanders did not win. But look at this list, none of these things are baked in, none are explicitly in the constitution but all of them are important. The items on this list are the legacy of responsible, pragmatic citizens and statesmen who cared enough to create them. And every one of those items are there because the central tenet of Republican orthodoxy, the big lie that informs all the rest, is garbage. The "free market" is a myth, a lie, that only serves the interest of the powerful. People are not angels, went the framer's argument for our constitution, therefore checks and balances on power are critical to the success of a republic because neither will leaders and politicians be angels. 

So many obstacles are in place in the United States to keep an asshole like Trump out of power. Why do they seem to keep failing? As the inexorable slog to election day continues, we keep getting back to the essential question of how is this even a race? The first comment I saw under the picture went like this:

"Trump won't eliminate this stuff. He just keep the wankers looking for freebies out"

And I remembered. There are a lot of really dumb people in this country. Not simply "low information" or "unable to think critically" but stupid and viciously mean-spirited. And these dummies are able to project their meanest and dumbest desires onto this reality TV star who is conning them. And then I remembered why I had given up writing about this election; it is utterly pointless. I have reached the point where the lies have piled up so high that I can't pick one to analyze. Have reached that point where the only comments I see are either like the above, nonsensical assertions of bigoted crap, or whatever the Bernieorbust people have morphed into sniping Hillary Clinton as being just as bad as Trump. 

When it comes down to Republicans who claim that Trump is great and openly tout how awesome it will be when he really kicks ass on the poor (nonwhite) "wankers" and the "I told you so" type finger-wavers who were probably never going to vote Democratic in the first place, what is the point of even trying? Then I look at that list and remember that the knuckle-dragging pig people opposed all of those items, and the far left wailers always said that none of it was good enough. But you know what? It is real and it is good, and the American people have accomplished a lot in spite of all of it. And we Americans of today can do more good, we can fix problems, we can put hate and bigotry and mindless ignorance back in its box, we can stand up the the money power elite and the legions of deplorable morons they manipulate. 

We do not have to convince the wanker commenter that Trump is a con man and lies to him, we have to turn out the dozen people he knows who aren't that dense and gullible to vote. We have to make sure that Trump loses so badly that the pig people go home and think about their lives and whether all that hate has ever made a positive difference for them. It is not the wanker that needs to be convinced there are no freebies to be had, that ship sailed a long time ago, but the hard-working people exposed to him. 

It's a good list and needs to be added to. The people who built those things were not angels, neither is Hillary Clinton but the choice is pretty stark. I never want to find out what a President Trump would do in office, we still have a chance to make sure that doesn't happen. The free market is a lie, Trump knows this, every other lie that comes out of his or any other Republican's mouth is meant to obscure that fact. Putting Republicans in office will be like the last time they controlled everything, did the pig people cheer for all the things that did get defunded or eliminated then? How about all the great new jobs they were able to get because GWB kept all the wankers out? Republicans will always put the needs of not you first, they will always make sure your boss can fire you and the bank can seize your house before they even think of building the wall or whatever fascist wet dream the wanker commenter wants.

Gaffes, incompetence, and severe threats to national security

Good grief the list is long, the Trump campaign is almost comical at this moment in time. Whether Bob and Chez are correct that this is the short-fingered vulgarian's way of setting up a big comeback in the greatest reality show his incurious, lazy mind can dream up so the media will have a story for their "Trump rebound" narrative, or they really are the incompetent neophytes they look like is almost irrelevant. I hope beyond hope that it is the latter and the trend until election day really is American voters coming to their senses but if it isn't then we are in real danger. I speak of course about Russia.

American history has basically been the story of what happens when a nation is removed from serious outside threats from hostile nation-states. Our bloodiest war has been with ourselves and since The War of 1812 the U.S. has not been invaded by a major power. America has subjected other neighboring states to invasion, intimidation, or other interventions but the shoe has never really been on the other foot. Americans cannot understand, by and large, what it means to have your way of life threatened by a hostile power. Nuclear annihilation was a possibility but that is too big for anyone to really comprehend. The attacks of 9/11 gave us a glimpse into the reality other nations face and what could happen, but now that fifteen years have passed is not a living threat.

In a superpower with no real rivals, Hollywood has had to invent a North Korea that could invade the U.S. We are so far removed from imagining ourselves attacked, invaded, occupied, and actually losing our freedoms to a foreign power that Trump felt comfortable in acting as though his friend Vladimir Putin is a viable ally in his quest for the presidency. Whether calling for Russia to hack his opponent was just another childish bully taunt or Trump really is a captive or even willing vassal of Russian oligarchs and under orders from their president, the man is a menace and cannot be allowed near the oval office.

Jane Meyer wrote of the frustration many of us feel, while bloggers like me usually feel left out and powerless when watching events unfold after Trump made his plea to Russia to "find [Hillary's] emails" even sitting Democratic Senators were left wringing their hands in futility. Was this gaffe simply a "wild serve" that is either "so wild it was hard to tell if it was a mistake or a deliberate attempt to destabilize all of the accepted rules of the game". We mere citizens will probably never know. Even if American intelligence agencies actually find out the depth of collusion between Trump and Putin they are unlikely to tell us.

But now that the pandora's box of potential treason is open due to Trump's blab, no one can afford to ignore what this potential fascist dictator could do. I noticed several #NeverHillary types who have now thrown their hero under the bus refuse to admit even the possibility that Russian intelligence was behind the hack of DNC servers. They were far more interested in the content of the handful of emails that showed some staffers not warming up to Bernie Sanders, because, again they just couldn't drop their partisanship for the good of the country. The hacking isn't proven as yet, though the experts report that the possibility is very strong. The #Bernieorbust people were spoiled little children before, now that they side with Russia de facto in order to smear Hillary Clinton they have disqualified themselves from ever being taken seriously again. Ignoring such an attack on our sovereignty because you are too stupid to see past the three decade smear campaign against Secretary Clinton is a grave breach of ethics.

After this gaffe, the ties Paul Manafort of Trump's campaign has to Russia, the fact that Trump refuses to release his tax returns become not simply incompetence or the kind of bullying hypocritical behavior that says this candidate is above the law but evidence that the whole Trump campaign is an attempt to put a Russian puppet in the White House. What limit could there be to Trump's treachery? He would certainly bankrupt the federal government, waste military resources on futile adventures, open us to radical Islamic terrorism, and severely disrupt the economy. What else could a hostile power want? The open declaration of betraying allies? Oops, that box is checked too. Jane Meyer should interview Thomas Madden for more precedents of when an Empire of Trust begins to crack at its foundations. The ancient Romans may not have understood cyber warfare, but they definitely understood treason, political polarization, the threats that undermining alliances entailed, and how upstart populist demagogues can sweep the imaginations of the angry dispossessed masses into power.

The Bully in Chief

Let's be frank, Donald Trump is just another average Republican voter who happens to have property and wealth. He is ignorant, lazy, incurious, immature, paranoid and gullible, and thinks he is the most important thing in the universe. I don't know about you but I have met hundreds of these guys in my travels, combining the worst aspects of white supremacists with ignorant and superstitious peasants. They are quick to anger, irrational in action, and capable of believing anything as long as it confirms their biases. Trump was able to play King Dick among the bullies, beating down all challengers who tried straddling service to the economic elite with pandering to those same peasants by simply being who he is. He is one of them and that is why the peasants found him so attractive, therefore it is no wonder that Trump was the last one standing. But just as when rural folk come to the big city, now that Trump is in the general election it was inevitable that his bluster and hard-ass act would falter.

It only takes one trip to the big city for Joe Sixpack to realize that he is insignificant and the tough guy act does not work. An average redneck (just synonyms for peasant) may experience doubt and shame, then realize that he needs to tone it down and learn how things really work. Not Trump, first of all he was in the big city all of his life and has never butted up against reality. Never got his ass kicked figuratively or literally, never had to serve in the military (which also makes you a little fish in a big pond of other tough guys), or sacrifice anything. If a country boy tries to keep up the act in the big city the chances he gets killed, injured, or humiliated are pretty high. Now that Trump is not comfortably bullying everyone around him, he is experiencing doubts about his own power. Instead of shutting up and sitting down though, he is doubling down on the bullying and it has finally jumped the shark.

Which came first, calling on an even bigger bully to do the dirty work for him (Russian and her president/dictator Vladimir Putin), mocking and attacking Gold Star Parents, throwing a baby out of his rally, or claiming that the election is already rigged? It doesn't really matter, they are all symptoms of his recognition of limits to his power. In each instance, he or a surrogate did not admit a mistake or even just let the backfire go, they doubled down. You can read the work of psychologists that have written how everything Trump does is a dominance exercise, but anyone who has seen a bully work knows it when they see it. It drives him berserk when someone refuses to be scared, it will expose him as a fraud. Trump tried to be a bully with the Washington Post when he pulled their access, hoping the newspaper would roll over and beg for forgiveness but something interesting happened when they didn't. The Washington Post has simply kept writing about Trump unencumbered by the need to bend the knee or suck up to He, Trump. Consequently the Post's reporting on the race has become less sycophantic and that is a good thing.

Trump beat the other Republican contenders by threatening to blow their game. The Republican voters just want to beat on the poor, nonwhite, non-Christian, and non-conservative Americans. They want a bully who will do that, not cut taxes on the rich and make it easier for their boss to ship their jobs overseas. Which is what Republicans do, that is their nature, they just use the peasants to get into power. Trump dispensed with all the free market mythology, made his platform undisguised herrenvolk democracy, and was rewarded with the undying loyalty of every small town bully in America. Within the alienated, atomized bubble these bullies live in, anything is possible.

Luckily, outside that bubble people are starting to realize what a dope Trump really is. Beyond the hard core of bullies for Trump, enough people are questioning whether He, Trump really has their interests at heart or is just another con man trying to swindle them. To those of us paying attention it has always been an act performed by a reality TV star, the big lie confidence scam. But within that bubble the peasants eat up every word and believe that He, Trump will really kick ass on undocumented immigrants and ban Muslims, treat BLM like a terrorist group and bring their jobs back from China. The rest of us see a peasant, a rich one for sure, but still an incompetent buffoon. However dangerous his followers may be if organized, they will grow fewer in number with each passing day because peasants are not famous for their longevity.

We are likely to go through this ritual every four years now. There is simply not enough of a constituency for what the GOP is selling on the national stage and it will be increasingly hard to disguise the free market fundamentalism with wedge issues. It is also highly unlikely that, now that the bully lobby has had a taste of what fascism can do for them, the peasants will settle for lip service on their white supremacist issues from the likes of Scott Walker or Ted Cruz. The danger is that the next demagogue won't be as much of a peasant at Trump, or will be able to hire smart people to disguise it better.

In any case, Hillary Clinton and Democrats down the ticket have to run up the score. We need to turn out as many people to vote against Republicans as possible. Only by overwhelmingly defeating the small town bully peasants can we ever hope to make them get tired of politics to the point that they will only attack those few victims near them and leave us alone to fix their mess.

More from the bright side

The United States has a republican form of government, public offices are temporarily filled by citizens bound by the law using the most democratic means possible. We may fall from this ideal in practice, sometimes to spectacular effect, but as an American tradition it is woven strongly into our civic fabric. The founders were skeptical of innate human goodness and fearful of concentrated power, therefore they designed the constitution to frustrate would be dictators and tyrants. After studying the right for so long, I share that skepticism and wonder if the ambition to rule and dominate others is not the natural instinct of the elite. Or at least one side of the elite, another side can find satisfaction in building structures and rules, and enforcing them with professional detachment. If there is any validity to that idea then the space between is where democracy can insert itself. Then, if the idea of self-government and a society of laws, not men is strongly ingrained in the electorate, it may be possible to rescue democracy even in the face of doom.

An individual can be smart and responsible, a group unfortunately seems to fall to it's lowest common denominator. Why is authoritarianism so popular among white men without college degrees? Why are there always members of the elite able to play on their fears? Demagogues and the scared, angry people they prey on are always going to exist, rolling in and out like the tide over time. So tyranny and dictatorship are easy, it is democracy that is hard. What actually happened in 2010 that allowed so many would be dictators to  take over governorships and public offices in that election and following off year contests? Was it simply that republicans rebranded as the tea party, allowing so many conservatives to embrace their hatred of Barack Obama without the taint of having supported Dubya? And that so many Democrats were disappointed in Barack Obama that they couldn't muster the will to counter the vile candidates running as tea partiers?

Swings in the public mood like this are why democracy is hard. The first thing so many tea bag governors and state legislatures did was push to break unions, demonize teachers, and restrict voting. If the business corporation is an economic incarnation of authoritarianism, labor unions are the equivalent incarnation for democracy. Unions are hard to build, difficult to maintain, trust in them easily lost but when they are strong they bring great benefit to their members, just as democracy can. And by making unions fight for their very existence, the tea bag governors eased the way to attack democracy itself through voting restrictions. Governors like Scott Walker, Rick Snyder, and then Pat McCrory invented a crisis of voter fraud and then pushed numerous provisions to make voting harder after the Supreme Court's authoritarian wing effectively nullified the Voting Rights Act. The northern states paved the way to ram through all sorts of voter suppression laws, but the old confederacy followed enthusiastically after the roadblock of the VRA was removed.

Elections are decided by who shows up to actually vote. People already have numerous reasons not to take the time to go vote, for democracy to work it requires the voters to know who the candidates are and what the issues are. The mass media, especially cable news, makes it very hard to actually find the facts, it is all buried in spin and punditry. Democrats are not perfect but Republicans go out of their way to obscure their motives and disguise themselves. So it is hard, these are basically givens. We assume the worst and grow cynical.

So it is very important that the courts can step in when voters are bewildered and exhausted on one side, and eager to throw democracy away and embrace authoritarianism on the other. This week the courts reminded us that democracy has strong roots in our social fabric. Some of Scott Walker's voter suppression schemes got thrown out by the courts as well. These are shining examples of why appointed judges who respect democracy and understand the benefits of letting people vote is such an important part of the system. We should be able to state openly and without apology or qualification that any attempt by elected officials to kick the ladder away by making it hard to vote are anti-democratic and anti-American. Suppressing voters, especially as it happens the votes of your opponents, should disqualify a party from holding office. If you can't win unless you prevent your "enemies" from voting, or even feel that this is a legitimate strategy, then you don't deserve to be a part of a democratic society.

This is the bright side, that the system is fighting back against those who would destroy democracy. Even if it is uneven, for instance, the Democratic Party should be running a strong campaign to get IDs for their voters in addition to educating people on the process and registering them to vote. More is better and the Children of Light have to do better than waiting for the firewall of courts to resist the hollowing out of democracy by its enemies.

On The Bright Side

Heck of a week huh? I apologize for my absence but I have been moving and trying to get settled in our new home. And I have been just floored by the brazen incompetence and mean-spirited nonsense coming out of Cleveland. I couldn't handle listening to any of the knuckle-draggers' speeches for more than a couple minutes and nearly lost my lunch when I caught our dumb senator from Wisconsin nasally whine through some horse puckey or other. About the only live segments I could handle was NBC's panel coverage, kind of like looking at an eclipse through a pinhole or reflector.

Then Thursday night happened... Now, was anyone expecting anything different? Of course Trump played Mussolini, Nixon, and George Wallace all wrapped up in a bad wig and orange skin. How was it actually different than the post 9/11 GOP poo flinging festivals? Of course they call for Hillary to be locked up, no one was able to punish them for lying the country into a way or financial collapse or for their obstruction along the way. The republican elite can do anything and their base of fascists will lap it up like dogs. They get away with openly flouting democracy and we'll just shrug and say "we can't do anything about it because freedom of speech". This is how authoritarianism takes hold in a free society.

But there is one last bulwark against the Trumpsterdreifung (takeover). Hillary Clinton and the Democrats are imperfect but they are the last line of defense. So, on the bright side this could all be a flash in the pan. Hillary could win. In decent world with a functioning democracy and an elite that respected the bountiful profits that can be made in a free country instead of the corporate totalitarian order, it would be a no-brainer. But we will be fighting and struggling the whole way. And then a new Clinton administration will have to fight with and survive a anti-American, disloyal opposition. The fight of our lives, again.

However, things could align and the authoritarian beast beaten back. More than a few die-hard 'wingers will give up in the face of their cheeto champion's defeat. Probably not an insignificant number will fall off the political face of the map. Bland, milquetoast Democrats may finally turn the tide in this civil war. Good will not win, but evil will be kept at bay. And we can all laugh at them, the ignorant, the racists, the gutter trash meth heads rubbing shit in their hair. They will either slink away, scream incoherently but harmlessly, or pick up one of their many assault weapons and "show us."

Won't be pretty in any case, but this could be when it is darkest before the dawn. At the very least we won't have to look at Trump on the TeeVee machine anymore or listen to talking heads plather on about him. This could be where a critical mass of adults finally say "ENOUGH!"

I'll take it. Consigning American fascism to the dustbin will be worth it.

What Do You Want For Christmas?

Just as a thought experiment, let's say that the election goes the way it should and the Democratic Party sweeps it in the landslide that really could be. So we, the non-insane portion of the electorate, have control over the federal government and hopefully made some progress unraveling teabag control over so many of the states. What do "we" do? And I guess it has to be stated as what is your wish list of progressive ideas? The number one challenge facing the United States is the Republican Party, for argument's sake let's assume that they have been rendered more or less harmless in the wake of a landslide election for the moment, what is number two? There is such a backlog of issues, such a huge pile of reforms necessary. What would you prioritize if you could have the ear of President Hillary Clinton and Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Leader Chuck Schumer? There is a good chance even with the professional liberal class of Democrats in charge, we progressives will get at least one thing from our list addressed. Last time it was health insurance reform, and judging on what Obamacare has actually done as opposed to what could have been it has made a real difference in the lives of many Americans for the good. This time around the issue that could make a real difference in the long run is the establishment of a financial transactions tax on stocks and bonds.

Of course, the sheer number and depth of problems facing this country and the world is breathtakingly immense. Why start there? My contention is that the force driving all the other problems is rooted in the fact that too few people have too much money and therefore power. Imposing what is in effect a sales tax on the things they buy will begin to drain the swamp of the speculative capital that has wrecked so much havoc on main street. Busting through the obstruction from the parasitic right and the resistance from Democrats who foolishly respect wall street as the paragon of professionalism will be difficult in the extreme, that's why it has to be the first thing done. Riding in a wave election and still beholden to the little people, I think there's a chance to ram it through. First, a tax on financial transactions could be very small, even 0.1%, just the establishment and legitimization of such a direct assault on entrenched privilege would be enough.

Income and wealth equality; a whole package of "social questions" that Thomas Frank, Robert Reich, Bernie Sanders, and so many others have articulated; is the cause of most problems and the impediment to addressing so many others. This country is so flooded with capital that the uber rich cannot find productive uses for it, or perhaps they don't want to. So they buy politicians, both personally while in office and guaranteeing future obedience through lobbyist jobs and other perks. This is just intolerable. The only way to start reducing the bribery, greed, and injustice at the top of our society is to drain that swamp of money that just corrupts people and distorts markets. That is why the financial elite have bought the important politicians in both parties and drive the price of entry into politics so high that only themselves or their servants can have a chance at power.

The primary effect of charging a sales tax on stock exchanges is to slow things down. That is how the original idea of James Tobin's tax was envisioned. He wanted the tax imposed on spot conversions of currency that would penalize speculation against currencies and stabilize economies, especially after computers skyrocketed the amount of speculation that occurs in those markets. That is a good idea too, as global capital now has the power to crush countries with attacks on their currencies. But just in terms of domestic financial markets a small transaction tax would slow down and stabilize markets too. Would the Dow Jones have lost so many points after the "leave" vote was tallied in the UK if people had to weigh paying an absolute tax for impulsive trades? It is likely enough investors would remember that the Brexit was actually non-binding, a momentary loss of reason by the mob that did not need to be repeated in the market.

The practical effect is all upside for the public interest. If trading is slowed down then mutual fund managers will have fewer opportunities to lard up pension funds with fees. Also, it will be more difficult for panics to set in if every investor has to weigh the tax they paid for a stock against the gains, they will on average wait a little longer. Plus, it will absolutely eat into the obscene compensation packages of managers and brokers. When a uniform cost like a tax is levied on all businesses of an industry, if there is any competition between firms they have to eat some portion of it or someone else will and steal all the business. There is a lot of competition between firms on wall street. And we won't even have to take seriously the moans and shrieks of outrage by the fat cats that a sales tax on stocks will sink grandma and grandpa, the usual line of propaganda whenever regulating wall street comes up, because average investors buy long. No, the tax will be borne most heavily by the big players that buy and sell all day, every day.

But the symbolic effect of taking on wall street by a Hillary Clinton administration, even in a way that will encourage stability in the market, will defuse so many of the detractors who say she is too cozy with the fat cats. It will be the first step in democracy finally reimposing regulation over an out of control and very dangerous sector of the economy that has so much power. It is really difficult to find actual dollar amounts for the trading on wall street, but it is likely in the trillions... per day. Therefore, even a 0.1% tax would raise significant revenue for a federal government always strapped for cash. That would amount to a billion dollars for each trillion bought, each day. A billion dollars not available for Goldman Sachs and the rest to lobby, bribe, and extort government. A billion dollars a day "redistributed" from the vultures and pirates who stole it. Maybe for once we could use it for something productive? Shoring up Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid come to mind. Or, a real Public Option, infrastructure spending, buying back all of the toll roads and parking meters that have been privatized, even getting the cost of education down to what it was when our parents went to college or forgiving student loans. The possibilities are endless, the public needs are great, and once put in place the tax could be raised and lowered as one more fiscal tool to manage the economy.

America The Selfish

This meme was recently posted on a the very partisan Facebook page Stop the World, the Teabaggers want off and has really caused a stir with commenters. Mostly due to Nancy Reagan being dead... however she was still among the living when the meme was first created. I'm still not a fan of memes and wish there was a citation but you don't need to sift all the way through Rick Perlstein's The Invisible Bridge to know that these charges are true. The real issue is deeper though. There is a severe lack of empathy in America, a deficit if you will, and it is not restricted to Republicans.

Maybe I have prattled on about Thomas Frank's Listen, Liberal too much already, but his core argument holds here. The faction that controls the Democratic Party has a large empathy deficit about economics and working life in America. Unless I did not catch it, Frank made it through his entire book without discussing his concept of the "Liberal class" controlling the Dems without mentioning Noam Chomsky's theories about the eternal class struggle in this country. That's okay, Thomas Frank's history kung fu is far superior to mine and he has no need to lean on anyone else to make his argument. But that won't stop me from connecting the two great thinkers' ideas about class consciousness among the elite.

To paraphrase: The history of America is that a highly class conscious business elite is always fighting a bitter class war against working people to beat them down and win the subservience and quiescence of the low to the high. This is the never ending battle for the hearts and minds of men, and is fought in this country with a naked and ruthless aggression that makes the rest of the world gasp. Now, that business elite which held itself as the enlightened and progressive side of American capitalism has taken effective control of and entire political party even as the regressive and reactionary side has long held firm control over the other one. However, it is the Republican elite that has driven the empathy deficit to it's impossible depth today. First AM talk radio was taken over after Nancy's Alzheimer's ridden husband removed the firewall of relative fairness and paved the way for one-sided reactionary propaganda to colonize the airwaves, brainwashing millions of listeners over decades. Then Republicans pushed through the deregulation of news on cable TV, bringing the bitter fruit of Fox News to a much wider audience.

The effect was to polarize and atomize a vast swath of Americans, the right-wingers all understand that they are on the same team but are only connected to each other vertically through what they were exposed to through conservative media. Thus programmed, these lone wolf soldiers in the Republican war on American civilization are able to shut down any reasonable debate they can worm their way into. And family get-togethers and holidays have never been the same since. Another book by Thomas Frank explains then how the Republican base reorganized itself to shout down any possibility for solidarity after the housing collapse and financial meltdown brought on by that bastion of selfishness on Wall Street. "Hard Times Conservatism" is how he puts it in Pity the Billionaire and deftly shows how the mass indoctrination into the values of the business elite of both stripes can and will prevent us from trusting one another, probably forever.

Perhaps, little by little as the vicious authoritarians fall victim to life's tragedies including the ones mentioned in the Nancy Reagan meme above, they will experience an extinction burst and realize the depths to which they have been lied to but it will never go away on its own. "It can happen to you" should be our rallying cry to rebuild trust in our fellow Americans and empathy for the struggles our neighbors and families face. Yes, you will probably get cancer.
